How to open your ultrasound study, step by step

  1. Copy the disc or drive to your computer

    Copy the entire folder from the CD or USB drive. Ultrasound files often carry no extension — names like IM000004 are normal and they are still DICOM. If the center handed you a .zip, use it as it is.

  2. Open the files in the viewer above

    Click “Open my ultrasound” and select everything, or drag the folder onto the dotted area. On a computer, the “Open a folder” button takes the study in one go; on iPhone and iPad there is no folder picker, so select the files in bulk or pick the .zip.

  3. Browse the frames

    The viewer lists what the study contains and displays each image as recorded — grayscale frames as grayscale, Doppler frames with their color. Move through them in order; an ultrasound study is usually dozens of frames, not hundreds.

  4. Zoom into the detail and measure

    Zoom to read the annotations the sonographer left on each frame, and use the measurement tools if you want to trace a distance yourself. Treat your own numbers as orientation — the exam’s official measurements are the ones in the report.

  5. Open the report next to the images

    If the disc includes the radiologist’s report as a PDF, it opens here in a panel beside the frames — the most useful way to read an ultrasound is report in one eye, image in the other.

  6. Export before closing the tab

    Nothing is stored anywhere: the study lives in this tab’s memory and disappears when you close it. Save or print what you need first.

What an ultrasound CD actually contains

An ultrasound exam is performed live: the sonographer sweeps the probe, watches moving images, and captures frames at the moments that document what the exam is meant to show — an organ measured, a flow pattern, a finding from two angles. Those captured frames are what gets written to your disc, each one a DICOM file, along with an index and usually the report.

The practical consequence: what you can review at home is the documented exam, not the live sweep. That is not a defect of the viewer — it is what the imaging center chose to export. If a frame you remember from the screen is missing, the center can usually re-export the study from its archive; ask for the complete DICOM export, with the report included.

Reading ultrasound frames without the probe in your hand

Ultrasound is the most operator-dependent modality in imaging: the diagnostic act happened at the bedside, in motion, and the frames on your disc are its evidence. Read them accordingly. The annotations matter more than they look — sonographers label organ, orientation and measurement on the frame precisely so that the still image can be interpreted later. Zoom in on them before anything else.

The gray texture itself is information: fluid appears black, tissue in shades of gray, and interfaces — walls, capsules, stones — as bright lines. Doppler frames add color for direction and speed of flow. What the still frame cannot give you is the movement and the sweep, which is why your own conclusions from a frame should stay modest, and why the report is the reference: it was written by the person who saw the exam, not a slice of it.

Your images stay on your device

To view them, nothing is transmitted anywhere. The browser reads the files you chose and draws them on your own device; we receive nothing, store nothing, and when the tab closes, nothing remains. You can watch the browser’s Network tab while you browse — no request carries your images out. An ultrasound is often an intimate study; this design means you never have to trade privacy for convenience.

The one optional exception: sending the study to your doctor. If you request a sharing link, the study is first encrypted on your device, and only then uploaded; the decryption key travels in the link’s “#” fragment, which browsers never send to servers, so we cannot read what we store. The link expires after 72 hours, opens a limited number of times and can be revoked — after which the file is deleted. It is a safer channel than mailing photos of a screen, and it dies on its own.

For clinicians: the frame belongs in the patient’s chart

A patient’s ultrasound reviewed in this free page answers today’s question and then evaporates — the tab closes and the study is gone. Frequently asked questions

Can I watch the moving video of my ultrasound here?

This viewer opens the images stored in your ultrasound study. What most imaging centers export to the CD are the still frames the sonographer captured during the exam — the documented moments, not the whole live session. Those frames open here with zoom and measurement tools, and color Doppler images keep their color. If your disc contains something the viewer cannot display, the loading screen will say so rather than fail silently.

Are the measurements printed on my ultrasound images the same as in the report?

Usually yes — the calipers and numbers you see burned into the frames are the measurements the sonographer took during the live exam, and they are what the report is built from. Anything you measure afterwards on a still frame is a reading aid, not a replacement: ultrasound is acquired in motion, and the person holding the probe had views you do not. When numbers matter, the report wins.

My ultrasound images are in color — will they display correctly?

Yes. Color Doppler frames — the ones that paint blood flow in red and blue over the grayscale image — are stored as color data inside the DICOM file, and the viewer displays them exactly as recorded. The color map itself carries the flow information, so nothing is converted or re-tinted.

The imaging center gave me JPG files instead of DICOM — can I still use them?

Your computer opens JPGs by itself, so for a quick look you need no special viewer. What the JPG loses is everything around the pixels: the patient and study identification, the acquisition data, and the calibration that made on-image measurement meaningful. If you have a choice, ask the center for the DICOM export — it is the version of your study worth keeping, and the one any medical system can import later.
